STAY AWAY by DAK featuring: SEV

There’s a lot about this release “STAY AWAY” by “DAK featuring: SEV”  that works well with its title, not least of all the simple loop of the hook that makes certain you’ll remember and recognise it – even in among some of the hardest and most saturated emo rap playlists around right now. The vocal style and the presentation of the song’s hook all makes for something loaded with character – these short, rhythmic bursts of lyricism contrast distinctively with what is a fairly delicate, mellow musical backdrop. And that’s all before you even get to the verses.

In terms of looking for something with a good groove, easy to vibe to and fairly easy to recognise – everything about this has been done well. DAK encourages the good times by showcasing that lifestyle and those dreams throughout his verses and indeed in the accompanying video. The track has a smooth and colorful finish about it that lets it just work. You can hear this coming through on mainstream radio and the concept is one that supports a belief in better things or that greatness is possible.

At its core, this is a track to turn up loud as the weekend kicks in. DAK is paving his way through the music world by fusing elements of emo rap and hardcore, among other snippets of influence. These creative edges can be heard and appreciated with each new listen to this release, but to hear it playing in the background is equally effective in presenting a simple, fitting hit that’s likely to satisfy a contemporary audience.

The second time you listen to this, the structure and the long-form melody of the verses connect a lot more intensely. The lyrics are great, the song has a concept and an idea that it sticks to throughout. As the music builds, the entire artists work hard to reach this united height of passion and power, and it works. The song is a grower for sure, but it makes certain to get to you as quickly as possible once you’re involved. DAK comes at this from a fresh and uncommon angle, and it works greatly in his favor.

Everything about this works perfectly, the lyrics and the soundscape, the performance, the structure – absolutely the best of his work to date and a uniquely interesting and quite addictive track that ticks a whole lot of boxes. The sort of song that speaks out for you or offers so much vulnerability and humanity that you can’t help but connect with it and feel what it portrays within.
